Quotations? We have Nearly Two Million of Them!
Where do you find the right quotations for that book or article you’re writing? Or the speech you’re planning? Or on a particular topic? Perhaps you’ll begin with an Internet search. The last time I did a search for “quotations,” there were 15.6 million entries! But the word “quotes” brought up nearly 30 times as many — an astounding 441 million! It might take a while to find you ones you want.
A Better Way
If Web surfing’s not a favorite sport, we can help. We own what’s perhaps the rarest and most extensive collections in existence. It includes more than 550 published volumes, containing about 1.8 million quotes, along with thousands of others we’ve collected from various sources over the past 35+ years. The oldest volume in our collection was published in 1874, and many others are more than a century old.
While the collection isn’t searchable online, you’re invited to call or email us when you need some quotes. We can usually find them quickly, starting at a very low price – zero! If more time is involved, you’ll find our rates very reasonable. For example, one client recently requested two dozen quotes on a specific topic, which we provided the same day, at no cost.
Another client asked for a quotation “that could be used for a Ph.D. study group presentation.” To give her a choice, we sent along a half-dozen of them, again on the same day and without charge. The next day she reported: “the first one is right along the lines we’re looking for,” and asked for a few others “that might focus on learning, achievement, or mastering difficult challenges.” To her delight, we again quickly provided exactly what she wanted.
Sounds easy, doesn’t it? You could probably find lots of applicable quotes on the Web, or at your local library. Maybe so – except for one thing. The quotes she wanted had to be in Latin! (And we threw in the English translations at no extra cost.)
In our volumes are: quotes, notes and anecdotes; epitaphs and epigrams; proverbs and principles; thoughts, laws and corollaries; wisdom and wisecracks; axioms and aphorisms; maxims and bon mots; famous first and last words; the cynical and the sacred. Whether you’re looking for quotes that are spiritual, humorous, inspirational, classical, motivational, contemporary, relevant, unusual, familiar, cynical or poetical, on upwards of 10,000 topics, we can help.
And, by the way, in addition to Latin, our foreign language repertoire includes selections in Greek, French, Spanish, Italian, German and Portuguese.
Who Makes the Call?
Ever wonder what constitutes a quotation, and who says so? Well, the late scientist and science fiction writer, Isaac Asimov, came about as close to answering those questions as anyone we’ve found. In his Foreword to Isaac Asimov’s Book of Science and Nature Quotations, he wrote:
“There are five billion people on Earth, and I should guess that at any given moment one or two billion of us are speaking. And I should further guess that virtually nothing anyone says is memorable…. There are times, however, when someone turns a phrase that seems so clever or so apt or so enlightening or so true, that the statement flies from person to person and gives pleasure at each passage. The statement becomes a ‘quotation.’ ”
